Fall arrives fast in central Alberta. One week the air smells like harvest and falling leaves, and the next you are scraping frost off the windshield in Blackfalds, watching the first snow dust the roofs in Red Deer, or pulling out winter boots in Lacombe. A home that is clean, dry, and organized in October is simply easier to live in all winter: mud stays at the door, windows let in more of our short daylight, and small problems are caught before ice, salt, and closed-up rooms make them worse.
Work through this list over a weekend or two, room by room, and you will head into winter feeling ready for guests, cozy evenings, and a long Alberta winter.
1. Give the entryway and mudroom a deep clean
Your entryway does the hardest work in winter. Empty it completely, wipe down hooks, shelves, and door handles, and wash the floor properly. Put a sturdy mat inside and outside the door, add a boot tray or rack for wet footwear, and keep a basket for hats, gloves, and scarves. When the first slush arrives, you will be glad the system is already in place.
2. Wash windows inside before they freeze shut
Clean the inside of your windows while you can still open them comfortably. Dust the frames and sills, wipe the glass, and check that windows close and latch properly. Clean windows make a real difference when daylight is precious, and a quick check now can stop a small draft from becoming a cold room in January.
3. Dust furnace vents and the area around filters
With the furnace about to run for months, dust the vent covers and the area around them, and make sure vents are not blocked by furniture, rugs, or storage. This is also a good time to check your filter routine, so your heating system is not pushing dusty air around a closed-up house all winter.
4. Degrease the kitchen before holiday cooking
Holiday cooking is much more enjoyable in a kitchen that starts clean. Wipe down cupboard fronts and handles, degrease the range hood and stove area, clean inside the microwave, and give the sink and taps a thorough scrub.
5. Check bathroom grout and silicone
Bathrooms take a beating in winter, with steamy showers and closed windows. Scrub grout lines, clean around taps and shower fittings, and look closely at the silicone around tubs and showers. If it is cracked, peeling, or moldy, note it for repair before moisture gets behind it.
6. Clean carpets before salt season
Salt, sand, and slush are coming, whether we are ready or not. Vacuum carpets thoroughly, including under furniture and along baseboards, and spot-clean any stains now. Clean carpet not only looks better, it also handles winter traffic better, and you will spend less time chasing grit through the house once boots are coming in wet every day.
7. Sweep out the garage
Clear a path in the garage before winter gear, snow shovels, and stored summer items take over. Sweep the floor, wipe down shelves, and put summer tools and toys where they will not be in the way.
8. Do not forget the baseboards
Baseboards collect dust all year, and it shows once the house is closed up for winter. Wipe them room by room with a damp cloth, paying attention to corners and behind doors. It is a small job, but it instantly makes freshly vacuumed floors and clean walls look finished.
9. Clear lint from the dryer vent area
Lint builds up quickly, and a clean dryer area is a sensible fall job. Clean the lint trap after every load, wipe around the dryer, and check that the vent area is clear of lint and clutter. If anything looks damaged or blocked beyond a simple clean, have a professional look at it rather than forcing it.
